Learn how fast YOUR site is with Google Page Speed Online

Google Page Speed Online has arrived!  Here is why this matters and what it means to you.

Page Speed Online GoogleLast year, Google announced that it will take the page loading speed of a site into account, when determining the site’s search engine ranking.  In short, sites with slow loading times, will rank lower than similar sites, which load faster.

So, how would you like to know what Google thinks about the speed of your site?

Introducing Google’s Page Speed Online!

The Google Page Speed online service will allow you to not only see how your site performs, by scoring it out of a potential 100 points, it will also give you recommendations on what’s slowing your site down and how to fix it.  By the way, this blog scored 91 out of 100 for page speed when I checked it.

Long loading times can ruin the user experience of a site.  As a result, sites that load slowly often get less traffic and fewer page views.  It was this user experience problem, which apparently led Google to  included page load times into their algorithm.

So, if you want to check the speed of your site (or your competitors sites) and learn how to speed things up, check out Google Page Speed Online right now!

Thanks for the feedback, Yael. It’s interesting to see how some well-known sites score too. One of my fave sites, copyblogger, came back very slow. That surprised me.

  2. Thanks Jim – even more useful information!

Its amazing how much Google keeps raising the bar – but I feel this is a good thing, prompting us to create continually better performing web sites with relevant content.

My score: 70 out of 100 – definitely room for improvement.

Hi Olwen. I’ve seen some very popular sites with a lower score than yours. We always have room to improve though ;)

  3. My sites varied from 63 (clients site with large images) to 71. Though one did have 80 the first time I checked them.

Cool – 91 out of a 100, not bad at all!

A good find this one. Always an important thing to keep an eye on.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hi Barney. I checked a few Headway sites over the past couple of days, and it seems they have all, thus far, scored really well.

  5. Thanks for sharing this tool Jim – it’s really useful. My only concern from the point of view of small business owners is that they won’t know what a lot of the suggested improvements mean or how to implement them.

Hi Jamie. At least armed with the info, they know what they need to get help with. I’m just glad that Google include the suggested fixes and offer some help ideas – rather than just quote a score.

  6. Thanks Jim! This is great to know. I’m on it!
